What a Small Business SEO Audit Should Include
By ENZORA · · 4 min read
If you are paying for a website that does not show up when people search for what you sell, the next step is usually an SEO audit. Not a vague "we will get you to page one" pitch. A proper audit is a written diagnosis: what search engines can and cannot see, what visitors struggle with, and which fixes are worth doing first.
This guide is for owners who want to know what they should receive before they hire anyone, including ENZORA.
What you should get back
A useful SEO audit is a document you can act on, not a 40 page dump of tool screenshots. Ask for these sections in plain language.
- Indexation. Which important pages are in Google, which are missing, and which thin or duplicate URLs are competing with the real ones.
- Titles and descriptions. Whether each money page has a unique title and description that match the search, or whether the whole site repeats the same tag.
- Technical blockers. Broken links, redirect chains, a missing or wrong sitemap, pages blocked by accident, and slow templates that hurt every URL.
- On page structure. One clear topic per page, sensible headings, and internal links from the homepage and service list into the pages that should earn enquiries.
- Content gaps. Searches your customers use that your site never answers. This is a list of pages to improve or create, not a promise that each one will rank.
- Conversion notes. If the page ranks but the phone number, form or offer is buried, the audit should say so. Traffic that cannot enquire is not a win.
- A fix order. What to do this month, what can wait, and what is not worth paying for.
If a proposal skips the fix order and jumps straight to a 12 month retainer, you do not yet know what you are buying.
Technical checks that matter for a small site
Small business sites rarely fail because of an exotic problem. They fail because the basics were never finished.
- The site should load over HTTPS, with one preferred version of each URL (www or not, trailing slash or not).
- The XML sitemap should list the pages you want found, and robots.txt should not block them.
- Service pages, location pages and the contact page should be linked in the menu or footer, not only buried in a blog.
- Images should have useful alt text where they carry meaning, and they should not be multi megabyte originals.
- Core pages should be readable on a phone without pinching. Most local searches happen on a phone.
Speed belongs in the audit, but a perfect lab score is not the goal. The goal is a site that loads the offer and the contact path quickly on a mid range phone.
Local SEO is part of the same job
If customers visit you, call you, or hire you in a set of cities, a website only audit is incomplete. Local SEO checks whether Google understands where you work and what you offer there.
That includes your Google Business Profile: categories, services, photos, hours, the website link, and whether the name matches your real business name. It also includes whether your address and phone are consistent on the site and on the profiles you actually use. Do not buy a pile of low quality directory submissions. Consistency on the profiles that customers see is enough to start.
A profile that is empty, unverified or pointed at an old domain will hold you back even if the website copy is strong.
How to read the report without getting lost
Sort every recommendation into three buckets.
- Fix now. Pages that should earn enquiries are missing, blocked, duplicated or untitled. The contact path is broken on mobile. The Business Profile is unverified or pointed at the wrong site.
- Fix next. Titles are generic, internal links are weak, and important services have no page of their own.
- Later or never. Cosmetic tool warnings, plugins you do not need, and content ideas that do not match how you actually make money.
You can do some of bucket one yourself. The rest is what you hire for. ENZORA's SEO Growth plan is $360 per month and includes a full audit, on page and technical fixes, two blog posts a month, Google Business Profile work and a monthly report. If you only want the diagnosis and a punch list, say that on the enquiry form and we will scope it that way.
What an audit cannot do
An audit does not rewrite your business. If the offer is unclear, the prices are hidden with no reason, or the site has no proof of who you are, search traffic will not fix the sales problem. We also do not invent reviews, case studies or rankings. If we have not done the work, we will not pretend a number is yours.
Use Search Console after the fixes go live. Impressions and the queries you appear for are the honest early signals. Enquiries and calls are the signal that matters.
When to book the audit
Book it when the site is live and you are ready to change it, or just before a redesign so you do not throw away URLs that already get visits. If you are about to rebuild, read the redesign notes on this blog as well, and bring the audit with you so redirects are planned before launch.
Contact ENZORA with your website address, the services you want to be found for, and the areas you serve. We will tell you whether an audit is the right first step or whether a smaller fix is enough.
Questions
How is an SEO audit different from monthly SEO?
An audit is the diagnosis. It lists what is broken or missing and the order to fix it. Monthly SEO is the ongoing work: content, technical fixes, local updates and reporting. Many businesses start with an audit, then decide whether a monthly plan is worth it.
Will an SEO audit guarantee page one on Google?
No. An audit can show why a site is hard to find and what to change. Rankings still depend on competition, your content, your location and how consistently the work continues. Anyone who promises a specific position from an audit alone is guessing.
Do I need an audit if I only want local customers?
Yes, if people in your service area cannot find you. A local audit should include your website and your Google Business Profile, plus whether your name, address and phone match everywhere they appear.
What should I send before the audit starts?
Access to Google Search Console and Analytics if you have them, your domain host, a list of priority services and the cities or countries you actually serve. If you do not have Search Console yet, that setup can be part of the first week.
